Hold Bush to Words (1/14/2002)
by Dean Hartwell
Candidate Bush often
said throughout the campaign that he would "restore honor and
dignity" to the White House. His comment could easily be interpreted as a
jab at President Clinton and his affair in the White House with Monica
Lewinsky.
But, I advise voters not to leave it at that. Like his father's "read my
lips, no new taxes", statements like this were relied upon by some
supporters of Bush. Since Bush is now the president, all of us have the right
to expect dignified conduct from him.
The problem is that Bush's comment is too vague for us to know where to begin.
Did he mean he would not behave like Clinton or does his concept of dignity
extend to his administration? Or, in the case of the Enron situation, to his
financial supporters?
We, the voters, must watch this Bush's lips closely. The more vagueness he
gives us about administration actions and policies, the more we ought to wonder
what goes on inside his White House.
