Sacrifice the Tax Cuts (1/20/2002)
by Dean Hartwell
Many people applauded
the tax refunds that President Bush gave to the taxpayers last year and support
his $1.3 trillion tax cut plan over ten years. Tax cuts are usually not a bad
idea during a recession, but the President ought to consider other social needs
as well.
As I mentioned on January 10th, shortly after Bush made his "over my dead
body" speech, that society would be better served had Bush spent more on
paying down the debt and spending more on education. Even Bush's recent
announcement that he would increase spending on the the Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) falls far short of the funding education
analysts say is needed.
Sacrifice begins at the top. Bush should amend his tax cuts to better afford
what the people need.
